Alphonse Edwin Haas, age 95, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Cedar Village, Ness City, Kansas. He was born March 7, 1917 in Ellis, Kansas the son of Anton and Rosa Kastzki Haas.
He was a farmer, barber, and a dry cleaner owner and operator and a lifelong resident of Ness County. He choose to stay home and work on the family farm for two years before going to high school. On February 4, 1942 he was inducted in to the United States Army where he served for 3 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Frank Stull Post 152, and the Ness County Historical Society. He was a former City Council member and an appointed interim mayor of Ness City. Al was instrumental in the planning, construction, and finishing of the current Leisure Years Center. He spent countless hours in the support of the senior center by giving his time and talents to the maintenance and landscaping and the organization of the daily operations. Al also used his organizational skills to assist the Ness County Historical Society in the organization, cataloging, and storing of the donated items and he helped with the maintenance and up-keep of the original Ness City School.
On December 28, 1942 he married Henrietta Leiker in Ness City. To this union four children were born. She preceded him in death on March 26, 1968. On July 2, 1971 he married Sue Bamberger Cranston in Ness City. She survives.
Other survivors include one son: Stanley Haas (Nancy), Wichita, Kansas; two daughters, Shelle Anna Harkness, Boulder, CO and Elaine James (Richard), McPherson; two step-sons, Steve Cranston ( Susan), Ness City and Roger Cranston (Shane`e), Manhattan, Kansas; two step-daughters, D.J. Erkie (Norm), Cimarron, Kansas and Barb Kyle (Kurt), Ness City; one sister, Rosa Moore; 19 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Henrietta Haas; son, Donald Haas; grandson, Ryland Schartz; four brothers and 8 sisters.
Rosary and Parish Vigil will be Monday, 7:00 P.M at Sacred Heart Church. Funeral Mass will be at the church on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, 11:00 A.M. Burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 9 am until 3 pm at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City Memorial contributions may be given to the Leisure Years Senior Center.
