Beulah Elsie Roberts, age 99, died Monday, July 6, 2009 at Cedar Village, Ness City. Born September 3, 1909 the daughter of Sion and Effie Bicking Wheeler. Her family moved to Ness City in 1916 and she graduated from Ness City High School with the class of 1928. She was a long time cook in various restaurants in the area. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Frank Stull Post American Legion Auxiliary, both of Ness City. She was also a volunteer "Green Thumb" worker and mini-bus driver for the Ness City Leisure Years Center. She was given a "4000" mile award for driving the Senior mini-bus
On November 25, 1930 she married Fred Helzer, Jr at Scott City, they were later divorced. She then married Earl Roberts on August 28, 1958 at Robinson, Kansas. Earl died June 23, 1976.
Survivors include: three sons: Wiley Helzer and his wife Viviene, Hutchinson, Laverne Helzer, Dighton, and Lyle Helzer and his wife Della, Goodland; three daughters: Bernita Maris and her husband Jim, Garden City, Lois McCain and her husband Don, Newton, Kansas, and Beverly Hall and her husband Keith, Bazine; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son, Harlan Helzer, a daughter, Delores Williams, three brothers, Ralph, Everett, and Claude Wheeler, one sister, Lucille Yarnell and two grandsons, Tommy Wilkinson and Phillip Helzer.
Friends may call from 9:00 A.M to 9:00 P.M. Wednesday and Thursday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Funeral service will be at the funeral home on Friday, July 10, 10:00 A.M.. Burial in the Ness City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the United Methodist Church or Cedar Village Long Term Care.
