Obituary

Darlene Augusta (Schreiber) Sargent died Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Rhode Island Suites, Ransom.

She was born May 24, 1925, in Ransom to Frank and Emma (Roediger) Schreiber. She grew up in Ransom and graduated from Ransom High School in 1942. From there she went on to Kansas State University and earned a Bachelor's degree in business education. Following her time at KSU, she taught at Inman and Jetmore High Schools, respectively.

She married Laurel R. Sargent at Ransom on May 29, 1955. He preceded her in death August 11, 2000.

Darlene remained a member of the Ransom community for the rest of her life. She and Laurel farmed and ranched in Ness County until his death. Following Laurel's death, Darlene remained on the farm until 2010, when she became a resident of Rhode Island Suites in Ransom.

She was a member of the First Mennonite Church of Ransom, serving on the Board of Trustees and as a children's Sunday school teacher. She also held various offices as a member of the Women's Mission Society. She was a charter member of the Gay Ginghams E.H.U, and served on the Ness County Election Board for many years. She remained an avid believer in education, supporting first her children and then her grandchildren in their school activities.

Survivors include a daughter, Pat Flax and husband, Cletus, of Brownell; two sons, Lynn Sargent, and Gary Sargent and wife, Paula, all of Ransom; grandchildren Tyler Flax and wife, Sierra, Amy Flax, Andrew Flax, Katie Sargent, Dylan Sargent, Kelli Erb of Denver, CO, Lauren Sargent, and Jordan Sargent and one great granddaughter, Aubrianna Flax; a sister, Marjorie Bartkoski and husband, Tony, of Seneca.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Susan Sargent; two brothers, Virgil and Vincent Schreiber; and two infant sisters, Irene and Dorothy Schreiber.

Services will be held Monday, November 7, 2011, at the First Mennonite Church of Ransom at 12:00 PM. Visitation will be Saturday, November 5, 2011, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Sunday, November 6, 2011, from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home of Ness City. Memorial contributions may be given to First Mennonite Church and Rhode Island Suites both of Ransom and the American Diabetes Association.
