Darrell Gene VanDegrift, age 81, died Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Ness County Hospital, Ness City. He was born on June 5, 1930 in Ransom, Kansas the son of Vernal and Rena Scarbough VanDegrift.
He was a tool pusher in the oil fields of California, a US Army veteran, a member of Frank Stull Post 152 American Legion , Ness City and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7972, Ransom, Kansas.
He married Geneva Baker on May 8, 1959 in Aztec, New Mexico. She preceded him in death on March 7, 1981. He is survived by a step-daughter, Betty Boyles, Ness City; a step-son, Doyle Higgs, Hemet, California, four grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 19 great great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and four brothers: Barry, Dewey, Harry, and Terry.
A memorial service will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Saturday, April 7, 2012, 10:30 A.M. Cremation has taken place and a private inurnment will be held at a later date. Contributions may be given to the Fort Dodge - Kansas Soldiers' Home in Memory of Darrell.
