Donald Dean Winter, age 71, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Born December 12, 1937 in Marion, Kansas the son of Ferd and Helen Hein Winter. He was an oilfield pumper and volunteered for many activities such as boy scouts and little league baseball. He was a 1956 graduate of Marion High School.

On January 20, 1957 he married Judith Faye Cogdill in Marion. She survives. Other survivors include: 3 sons, Dick and Shellie Winter and children, Courtney and Dylan; Randy and children, Corey, Lindsey, and Ashley; Shawn and Karen Seib and children Dallas, Easton, and Zoe all of Ness City; 2 daughters, Traci and Craig Maier, Lakewood, Colorado and children, Taylor and Zach; Kim and Michael Melichar, Andale, Kansas and children, Tyler, Rylee, Adam, Ashley, Lindsey, and Hannah; grandson Ryan Winter and Jodilynn Nowak, Ness City and children, Haylee, Raegen, and Kenlee and granddaughter, Angela and Jeremy Rock, Amarillo, Texas and children Logan, Alec and Jase and 3 sisters Beatrice and Forrest Kelsey, Virginia and Charles Heerey, and Marjorie and Kenneth Sandwell all of Marion.

He is preceded in death by his son Kenneth.

Funeral service will be at the United Methodist Church, Ness City on Saturday, October 24, 2009, 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Vernon Bowers presiding. Friends may call on Thursday and Friday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Burial in the Ness City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Ness County Relay for Life.
