Earl "Gene" Delaney, 73 was born May 28th, 1940 on a farm Southeast of Ness City, KS to Homer & Fern (Libby) Delaney.
He remained a lifetime resident of Ness County until his final journey home on May 10th, 2014 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City. He spent his lifetime in Ness County as a farmer/rancher and owner of Gene's Oil Field Service. He had a passion for driving horses and wild mules. Flying, fishing, and hunting were just a few of the many other things Gene enjoyed. In August of 1995 he was injured in a farming accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Determined as ever Gene continued to farm and hunt. Although his life had been changed he enjoyed life to the fullest.
Gene was a member of Pheasants Forever, on the state board for Assistive Technology of KS (ATK), Agri-ability, Old Settlers Reunion Committee for 25 years.
On June 5th, 1960 he married Janette (Blehm) at Bazine, KS. To that union one daughter was born. On May 23rd, 1991 he married Judy (Davenport) of Ness City.
Survivors include his wife, Judy, of the home, daughters, Sandy (Kenny) Rupp, Ness City, Katie (Jarret) Knieling, Rush Center KS and three step-daughters, Billie Jo (Justin) Whipple, Dighton KS, Becky Melcher (fiancé Jeff & son Jake), Overland Park KS, and Robbie Davenport, Wichita KS. Two granddaughters, Tracy Rupp and Payson Knieling and six step-grandchildren, Brendan, Melanie, McKenzie, Jessica, Taylor and Briana. One sister, Sharon Munsch of Ness City, and many nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Homer & Fern, brother, Clayton (Jake) Delaney of Great Bend, sister, Shirley Dechant of Ness City and grandson and hunting buddy Chris Rupp of Ness City. Gene will be dearly missed by all of his many friends, family and people whose lives he touched.
Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Tuesday, May 13, 9 A.M. – 9 P.M. with family present from 6 – 8 P.M.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Ness City.
Memorials can be made to the Ness County 4-H shooting sports or Gene Delaney Memoral Fund.
