James Joseph Cheney, also known as Jimmy Joe, 58, of Salina KS died Wednesday, March 14, 2012. He was born Feb. 10, 1954 in Ransom, Kansas, the son of the late Joseph Darrell Cheney and Maxine Hansen Cheney of Utica, Ks.
Mr. Cheney worked on the farm Northwest of Utica till he got out of high school. He then moved to Great bend where he met his first wife Gloria Irving. They were married on Dec. 31 1978 in Dighton Kansas.
Jimmy Joe owned the bar in Utica, KS for a short time and eventually ran his father's farm. In 1999 he moved to Salina, KS where he helped operate a motel and then in 2002 opened his own liquor store in Salina. In Oct 2007 the store burnt down.
Survivors include his son, Zackery James Cheney; sister and brother-in-law, Linda & Don Dodrill of Utica, Ks; and a sister-in-law Dorothy Helming Cheney
He was preceded in death by 4 days by his brother Ronald Darrell Cheney.
A combined memorial & burial service will be held for Ronald and James, Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 10 AM at the Utica Cemetery in Utica, Ks. with Fr. Henry Hildebrandt of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ness City and Rev. James L. Brackett, United Methodist Church of Utica officiating.
