Helen LaVerne Handy, age 88, passed away on April 22, 2011 at the Hodgeman County Long Term Care, Jetmore. She was born on July 16, 1922 in Beeler, Kansas the daughter of Jacob Earl and Bernice Irene Gilmore Whipple. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Baptist Church, Eureka, Montana, the American Legion Auxiliary, Ness City, and the Delta Gramma Club, Englewood, Colorado.
On February 25, 1941 she married Gilbert Handy in Jetmore. He preceded her in death on January 8, 1984. She later married Robert Johnson. They were divorced, but remained close friends.
She is survived by two sons: Dale Handy, Burdett, Kansas and Daryle Handy, Eureka, Montana; two daughters: Connie Stout, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Tami Burkhart, Burdett, Kansas; five brothers: Jim "Chief" Whipple, San Diego, CA, Don Whipple , Arvada, CO, Rex Whipple, Beeler, KS,Tom Whipple, Chicago, IL, and Paul Whipple, Fowler, CO; one sister: Jennie Bates, Denver, CO; 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by daughter, Linda Handy, four brothers: Clarence, Fenton and Wayne Whipple and Thayne Starner; two sisters: Hazel Prose and Ruby Mather, and two great grandchildren including Karyn Koterwski.
Funeral service will be at the First Baptist Church, Ness City on Thursday, April 28, 2011, 10:30 AM with Pastor Roger Alford presiding. Burial in the Ness City Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Memorial contributions may be given to the Gideons or the Burdett EMS.
