Obituary

Mary Arliss Scott, age 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28th, 2025, in Ransom, Kansas.

Mary was born on September 1st, 1934, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Delbert and Lucy (Riley) Moody. She spent her youth in Dodge City and worked throughout her teen years in the Dillon's grocery store her father managed. She graduated from Dodge City High School and went on to attend Oklahoma Christian College and Abilene Christian University.

Mary met her husband, Bill Scott, at a church function, and the two were married on July 5th, 1954 in Dodge City, KS. They made their home on the Scott family farm near Ransom, Kansas, where they remained and celebrated 70 years of marriage last year. Mary briefly taught school in Arnold before devoting herself to being a full-time farm wife and mother, a role in which she thrived. However, she continued teaching in Bible school at the Church of Christ in Ransom, where Bill and Mary were members. Later in life she and Bill worshipped at the First Mennonite Church in Ransom.

Mary also spent a few years selling Avon products, enjoying any opportunity to visit friends and family in her community. She was an active member of the Kansas Shorthorn Lassies organization and loved to support her family in all of their activities until her health no longer allowed.

As a talented seamstress, Mary's favorite hobby was to sew a variety of items for her family, especially doll clothes for her daughter, Karen. While she wouldn't tell you that she could play the piano, she often enjoyed sitting down with her grandchildren to plunk out the tunes of "Chopsticks" or "Heart & Soul," always accompanied with a good laugh. Mary's greatest joys in life were her children, including those she took under her wing: Marc Boethin (Houston, TX) and Bryan McDaniel (Ransom, KS).

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Bill Scott; her parents, Delbert and Lucy Moody; her brother, Dale Moody; her grandson, Kyle Scott; and her granddaughter, Chantelle Scott.

She leaves behind to mourn her passing, her children: Kent Scott (Ottawa, KS), Craig Scott (Ransom, KS), and Karen (Alvin) Story (Grain Valley, MO); her sister, Wanda Evans; her in-laws, Bob and Patsy Scott; her cousin, Barry Metcalf; nephews and nieces, Michael Evans, Robert Evans, Jan Immel, Shae Jimenez, and Michelle Moody; her grandchildren, Tracy (Kyle) Proffer, Kelly (Darrell) Morris, Chailyn Scott, Aaron Story, and Andrew Story. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren: Ford Proffer, Beau Proffer, Jane Proffer, Selah Morris, Sibby Morris, and Bryar O'Mealey.

Mary's legacy of love, faith, and dedication to her family and community will be remembered by all who knew her.
