Ray Willard
Whipple
March 26, 1937 – October 2, 2025
Ray Willard Whipple lived a life of quiet strength, faith, and service that left an enduring mark on all who knew him. Born March 26, 1937, in Beeler Kansas to Clarence Jacob Whipple and Cecil Lucile Davis, Ray grew up with the values of hard work, integrity, and kindness that shaped every step of his journey.
He was a proud graduate of Beeler High School and Kansas State University. Though he achieved much in academics, his true legacy lies in the students he guided as a teacher. To Ray, teaching was never just about books or lessons—it was about helping young people believe in themselves. Many former students have said he was the mentor who pushed them to dream bigger and do better.
On June 18, 1967, Ray married Joyce Earllene Harvey, the love of his life. Their marriage of 53 years was a partnership built on faith, laughter, and deep devotion. Together, they raised two sons, FCC(SW) ret. Steven and Shane, who remember their dad not only as a steady guide but also as their greatest supporter. Ray welcomed into his family Steven's wife Pam, Shane's wife Becky, and Alainya mother of his grandsons, whom he loved as daughters.
Ray delighted in his grandchildren: Steven's sons, Aaron Whipple (wife Aidan), Daniel Whipple, and Seth Whipple (their mother, Alainya Abdelkader); and Shane's daughters, Cassandra Martinez (husband Domingo) and Allison Mills. His great-grandchildren were a source of joy and pride—Steven's grandson, Lachlan Whipple and Shane's grandchildren, Isabella and David Martinez. Family gatherings often found Ray surrounded by stories, laughter, and the simple pleasure of being near those he cherished most.
He is proceeded by his wife, Joyce; parents, Clarence and Cecil; father-in-law, Earl Harvey; mother-in-law, Idell O'Dell Harvey; sister, Gertrude Slagle; brother, Earl Whipple; brothers-in-law, Floyd Slagle, Dave Johnston, Charles Eugene Harvey, and Gail Harvey; three nephews, Brad Slagle, Victor Johnston, and Joshua Young; a niece, Marlita Whipple; and grandson, Tyler Mills.
He is also survived by three sisters, Rose Johnston, Lois Mauch, and Peggy Young; two brothers, Terry Whipple and Ned Whipple; two brothers-in-law, John Mauch and Jeff Young; two sisters-in-law, Kay Whipple and Carolyn Harvey; Steven's son's mother, Alainya Abdelkader; numerous nephews, nieces, and their families.
Service was woven into every part of Ray's life. A long-time Lions Club member in Ransom, he could always be found lending a hand to a neighbor or organizing a project for the good of the community. As a faithful member of the Methodist Church, he lived out his beliefs through action, offering encouragement, comfort, and leadership in his congregation.
Though his earthly journey has ended, Ray leaves behind a legacy of faith, generosity, and service. His family takes comfort knowing that he is now with the love of his life and has heard the words, 'Well done, good and faithful servant.'
