Ruby B. Barrows, 88, of Leawood, Kansas passed away on October 7, 2014. Ruby was born on March 29,1926 the daughter of Ralph and Pearl Black in rural Ellsworth County, Kansas.

As an infant,her parents and grandparents moved to Ness County, Kansas. She was a graduate of Ness City High School in 1944. In January of 1944, Ruby eloped with Thomas M. Barrows. In 1947, her son, Richard was born. In 1948, the family moved to LaCrosse, Kansas where she lived until March of 2012. In November of 1953, her daughter, Nancy was born.

After her children reached high school age, she returned to the workforce, first at the Rush County News, and then as clerk of USD 395 where she retired from in 1992. In her retirement, Ruby was known as an avid KU basketball fan and loved following the Jayhawks.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Pearl Black; her husband, Thomas Barrows; and her daughter, Nancy Barrows Slattery. She is survived by her son, Richard Barrows of Leawood; her granddaughter Ann (Bryce) Walter of Leawood; and her son-in-law, Thomas Slattery of Hobe Sound, Florida.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Ness City Cemetery, Ness City, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the Rush County Long Term Care.
