Terry Dean
Uehling
January 30, 1949 – May 5, 2024
Terry Dean Uehling, 75, passed away May 5, 2024, at the Brookdale Assisted Living in Dodge City, Kansas. He was born on January 30, 1949, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Ray and Edna (Stullken) Uehling.
Terry was raised on the farm at Riverside in southeast Ness County. He attended Riverside school and graduated from Ness City High School in 1966. He attended Kansas State University then transferred to Fort Hays State University where he earned his BA.
Terry lived in Wichita for a short time before moving back to Ness County. In 1973 he married Glenda Pruitt in Dodge City and moved his new wife and her daughter, Jill, to the family farm. They divorced in 1981.
Terry farmed and raced, his biggest passion being super-modified sprint cars.
Being mechanically-mind, Terry would use his gift to work on farm equipment or fine tune the setup of his race car for an upcoming race.
Terry started his racing career at the young age of 16. One of his first cars was the #27 Vicki, similar to a Model A sedan but with a fiberglass body. He won numerous awards including the Midwest Dirt Champion in 1977. Terry raced primarily at Merrick Auto Speedway in Dodge City, but also raced in many locations throughout the Midwest.
In 1986 Terry married Paula (Antenen) Good of Dodge City. She preceded in him death in 2011.
Terry's racing career ended in Dodge City in 1987 with a violent wreck that left him with a severe head injury. Terry's tenacity, sense of humor and belief in positivity helped him pushed through. He continued to farm and go to races, being an inspiration to many other racing families.
Terry retired from farming in 2021.
Survivors include his daughter, Jill Uehling of Ness City, his sons, Lance (Laura) Good of Tucson, AZ, Brennan (Cammy Mathews) Uehling of Hays and Cale (Jacqueline) Good of Omaha, NE; a brother Tom (Margo) Uehling of New Port, AR; a nephew Jason (Karen) Uehling of Memphis, TN and multiple grandchildren.
