A native Kansan, Virginia was born in Saline County April 1, 1915, the oldest child of Laura Stone Briand and Maurice Briand. She graduated valedictorian from Lincoln High School and taught first through eighth grade in a one-room school while attending Ft. Hays State University in summers. She spent most of her adult life in Arnold and Ransom. At age 50 she commuted to Ft. Hays several times a week, completing a double degree in Art and Education, with certification as a Reading Specialist. Her creative endeavors included visual art (still life and landscapes), tapestry and other needlework, quilting, and writing. A woman of wide-ranging interests, she also practiced the art of living each day to the fullest and treated each person she met with kindness, generosity, and love.
